Manage assets
View supported tokens and collectibles associated with your address. Receive assets by sharing your public address, and send only after confirming the recipient and network.
Learn about safe transfers ↗Your browser can be a doorway to Ethereum and the decentralized web. Here’s how MetaMask works, how to get started safely, and what to know before you connect.
MetaMask is a self-custody crypto wallet available as a Chrome extension and mobile app. It helps you manage digital assets and connect to decentralized applications—often called dapps—without handing control of your wallet to a central platform.
Think of it as a keyring and an interaction layer for blockchain networks. Your wallet address is public, like an account number; your Secret Recovery Phrase is the private master key. MetaMask does not hold your funds in an account on your behalf. Instead, it helps you authorize actions using keys that you control.
That distinction matters. Transactions are recorded on-chain, and many cannot be reversed. A wallet makes Web3 more accessible, but it also places responsibility for protecting your credentials and reviewing each transaction in your hands.
MetaMask is commonly used with Ethereum and compatible networks, although supported features can differ between networks and applications. Switching networks does not move an asset between them: always check the destination network before you send, and make sure the receiving service supports that network.
It can help to separate three ideas: your address identifies where assets can be sent; your recovery phrase can restore control of the wallet; and a password or device credential protects access on a particular device. They serve different purposes, so treat the recovery phrase with exceptional care.
MetaMask connects familiar browser habits with blockchain experiences. Explore at your own pace; each action still deserves a careful review.

Learn about safe transfers ↗Approve a connection when you want a site to see your public address. A connection is not the same as granting permission to move funds—read each request on its own terms.
Understand permissions ↗Decentralized finance includes exchanges, lending protocols, and other smart-contract applications. Their risks vary, and advertised yields are never guaranteed returns.
Explore the trade-offs ↗Installing a wallet is a security-sensitive step. Follow the publisher’s official route and slow down if anything looks unusual.
Visit metamask.io ↗Go to MetaMask’s official website and follow its Chrome installation link. Check the publisher and extension details. Avoid sponsored lookalikes, unsolicited messages, and links from strangers.
Choose to create a wallet or restore one you already control. During setup, the recovery phrase may be shown once. Write it down offline and store it somewhere private and secure.
Never enter it into a website, share it with support, or save it in a screenshot or cloud note. Anyone with the phrase can control the wallet. MetaMask support will never need it.
Learn how to check the active network, copy your public address, and read a transaction prompt. Consider a small test transfer before any larger one; fees and network conditions can change.
A wallet prompt is a request to make a decision, not a routine pop-up to dismiss.
The golden rule
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is not a password-reset code. Keep it secret, offline, and out of every chat, form, and website.
Review the site, network, recipient, token, and amount. A transaction may be irreversible once confirmed.
Fake support accounts and phishing pages often create pressure. Navigate to known official sites yourself instead of following unexpected links.
Some dapps request token allowances or other permissions. Understand what you are granting and review connected sites and approvals periodically.
Install browser and extension updates through trusted channels. Secure the device itself with a passcode, updates, and reputable security practices.
Is MetaMask itself a bank or exchange?
No. It is wallet software for managing keys and interacting with blockchain networks. You remain responsible for your assets and transaction choices.
Does connecting a wallet give a website my recovery phrase?
A normal connection should ask to view your public address, not your Secret Recovery Phrase. Never reveal or type the phrase into a dapp or support conversation. Treat any request for it as a serious warning sign.
Are DeFi transactions free?
Usually not. Network transactions can incur gas fees, which vary with the network and activity. Read the amount and fee shown in the wallet before approving, and remember that a failed transaction may still consume a fee.
Can a transaction be undone?
Blockchain transfers are generally final after confirmation. Double-check addresses and networks, and consider testing with a small amount before sending more.
MetaMask can make it easier to explore DeFi and the broader decentralized web from Chrome. It is a tool—not a bank, investment adviser, guarantee of safety, or promise of profit. Network fees, smart-contract bugs, scams, volatility, and user mistakes can all lead to losses. Start with learning, use official resources, and never risk funds you cannot afford to lose.
